“Longevity” has become one of beauty’s new favourite words. Scroll through Instagram or TikTok and you can see how dramatically the vocabulary of skincare has expanded. A decade ago, most conversations about ageing skin revolved around familiar territory like retinol, Vitamin C, exfoliation, collagen and SPF. Today, the language sounds markedly different.
“Salmon DNA” is making PDRN more accessible to a mainstream beauty audience. NAD+ has travelled from cellular longevity research into jars of night repair creams. Peptides are being discussed as collagen-supporting technologies while exosomes, mitochondrial health and regenerative skincare have entered everyday beauty conversations in a way few would have anticipated a decade ago.
This is more than a new crop of trending ingredients. It reflects how quickly the idea of longevity has moved from the laboratory into the beauty consumer's vocabulary.
The timing is significant. Women are increasingly looking beyond the traditional promise of anti-ageing and towards ageing gracefully by maintaining healthy, resilient skin rather than treating every change as something that needs to be reversed. At the same time, some of the most advanced longevity-led formulations are sitting at luxury or biotech price points, creating a category where the science can feel more exclusive than accessible.
And that leaves us, as consumers, with a very crowded shelf of ingredients, impressive-sounding claims and increasingly technical terminology that can make it difficult to tell what is genuinely meaningful for skin and what is simply having a moment.
So when we received a DM asking us which longevity actives are actually worth knowing about, we thought it was a question worth answering properly. Not from the perspective of which ingredients are trending but which ones have a meaningful role to play in a longevity-focused formulation.
At The Lab of Skin Longevity™, we have looked at the ingredients across our formulations through precisely that lens. Not because an ingredient is having a moment online but because it has a defined role within a formulation designed around long-term skin health.
Here are 10 longevity actives worth knowing and why they made the cut at Karmic Beauty.
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)
NAD+ or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide has become one of the most talked-about molecules in the broader longevity field and has perhaps done more than any other ingredient to bring the language of longevity into mainstream skincare.
It is a coenzyme involved in cellular energy metabolism. It exists in every cell in the body and participates in processes that require cells to convert nutrients into usable energy.
For skin, this becomes particularly interesting because maintaining healthy skin is an energy-intensive process. Cell renewal, repair and the production of important structural components all depend on cellular activity. As the skin changes with age, the systems that support these processes also change, which is one reason NAD+ has become such a prominent molecule in longevity science.
But NAD+ is not interesting simply because it sounds futuristic. Its real appeal is that it shifts the skincare conversation from what the skin looks like today to what is happening within it over time.
That is also why formulation matters. An ingredient can have an impressive biological story and still be poorly suited to a finished product if its stability, concentration or delivery are not considered carefully.

Ectoin

Ectoin is an extremolyte, a molecule produced by microorganisms that survive in environments where conditions can be exceptionally harsh. Its role in those organisms is to help protect their cellular environment from extreme conditions.
That is what makes it fascinating for skincare and especially relevant in an Indian context. Indian skin is exposed to a particularly demanding combination of environmental stressors, from intense UV exposure and pollution to heat, humidity and frequent fluctuations in temperature.
Indian skincare therefore cannot be separated from the environment it is formulated for. The conditions our skin experiences every day have to be part of the formulation conversation.

Ceramides
There is something interesting about ceramides. Your skin already makes them.
These naturally occurring lipids are a major component of the outermost layer of skin and help form the barrier that limits water loss and protects against external irritants.
Imagine the outer layer of skin as a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, ceramides and other lipids form part of the mortar holding everything together.

Argireline
Some skincare ingredients become famous because of the science. Others become famous because of the nickname attached to them. Argireline falls somewhere in between.
Also known as Acetyl Hexapeptide-3, Argireline is a peptide used in topical formulations targeting the appearance of expression lines. It became particularly well known because of comparisons with Botox, although the two are very different approaches and should not be treated as equivalents.
What makes Argireline interesting is that it is focused on a very particular aspect of visible ageing - the repeated facial movements that contribute to expression lines.
It is therefore quite different from an ingredient focused on hydration, pigmentation or the skin barrier.

Matrixyl 3000
If Argireline is concerned with expression lines, Matrixyl 3000 takes us into the structural side of visible ageing.
Matrixyl 3000 combines two peptides: Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7.
The name Matrixyl comes from its association with the skin's extracellular matrix, the structural environment surrounding skin cells. This matrix contains components such as collagen and elastin that contribute to skin's firmness, elasticity and overall architecture.
As we age, changes to this structural environment contribute to the visible changes we associate with ageing skin.
That is why Matrixyl 3000 has become such a recognised name in peptide skincare and formulations targeting fine lines and firmness.

Centella PDRN
PDRN may have the most recognisable social-media nickname on this list “salmon DNA.”
Behind the catchy name is polydeoxyribonucleotide, or PDRN, a DNA-derived ingredient that has a history in medical and aesthetic applications. Its rise in beauty is part of a much larger shift towards recovery-focused and regenerative-inspired skincare.
That has made PDRN particularly prominent in Korean skincare, where recovery, soothing and skin-supporting formulations have become major areas of interest.
Centella PDRN takes that conversation further by bringing Centella into the formulation.

Its versatility means it can move easily between product categories.

Wild Yam is perhaps the least obvious ingredient on this list. It does not have the instant recognition of NAD+ or the social-media appeal of PDRN. But its inclusion demonstrates something important about the new generation of longevity ingredients. They do not all have to be laboratory-sounding.

The interesting thing about Noni Stem Cells is not the word “stem cell”. It is the plant biology behind the ingredient.
