If you think four walls are enough to protect your skin from the sun, you are about to get the shock of your life.

We tend to think of buildings as giant sun shields. Concrete is one of the most resilient materials on earth, so surely once you are inside, your skin can finally take a break from the sun, right? Wrong.

While concrete may keep most sunlight out, your windows can create a loophole. Ordinary window glass blocks most UVB, the radiation primarily responsible for sunburn, but much of UVA can still pass through. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and is associated with oxidative stress and changes to collagen and other structures involved in skin ageing. [1]

1. Indian Skin Rarely Burns, It Tans

If you have Indian skin, you may have grown up hearing that sunburn is something that only happens to Caucasians. European skin can turn red, sting and peel after too much sun. Indian skin, however, often responds differently. It tans. And because tanning does not hurt, it is easy to assume that nothing much has happened.

But tanning is your skin responding to UV exposure by producing more melanin. That melanin does offer some natural protection, which is one reason darker skin is less likely to burn. It does not, however, make the skin impervious to UV-induced pigmentation, oxidative stress or the gradual changes associated with photoageing. [1,2]

This is where a lot of sunscreen conversations feel slightly removed from the reality of Indian skin. Many of the sunscreens we have grown up considering the gold standard were developed around the needs of European skin. They are not bad sunscreens. They simply emerged from a different set of skin concerns, where preventing erythema and sunburn is a much bigger part of the equation.

For Indian skin, the conversation often looks different. Tanning, pigmentation and uneven skin tone can be far more immediate concerns, even when there is no redness to signal that the skin has had too much sun.

2. SPF 50 Does Not Tell You the Whole Story

Once you realise that preventing a tan is not the only reason to protect your skin, the next question becomes: what exactly should your sunscreen protect you from?

Most of us know the SPF number. Far fewer of us know what sits behind it.

SPF primarily measures protection against UVB, the radiation most closely associated with sunburn. UVA protection is assessed separately, which is why SPF alone does not tell you the complete photoprotection profile of a sunscreen. [3]

3. Your Skin Can Still Receive UV After Sunset

This one sounds impossible, so let’s get the timing right first.

Once the sun has actually gone below the horizon, you are no longer receiving meaningful direct UV radiation from the sun. The interesting bit happens just before sunset, when the sun is sitting low in the sky.

At this point, sunlight has to travel through much more of the atmosphere before reaching the ground. UVB, with its shorter wavelengths, is scattered and absorbed more readily along the way, so its intensity falls much faster. UVA behaves differently and can remain measurable while the sun is still above the horizon. [4]

That creates a slightly confusing situation. The UV Index can be very low towards the end of the day because it is weighted heavily towards the wavelengths responsible for sunburn. A low UV Index therefore does not mean that every wavelength of ultraviolet radiation has disappeared. [4]

Think about a summer evening in India. It is 6 pm, the heat has eased, the sunlight looks softer and you are heading out for dinner. It can feel as though the day's sun exposure is over. If the sun is still above the horizon, it isn't.

This does not mean you need to panic about evening exposure or keep applying sunscreen after dark. It means your decision to use sunscreen should be guided by actual daylight exposure rather than how hot the sun feels or whether you are likely to burn.

4. Your Skin Has Its Own Microscopic Defence System

There is something else living on your skin every day that sunlight can affect. It’s called your microbiome.

Your skin is home to a complex community of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Together, they interact with the skin barrier and immune system and help maintain the environment your skin depends on.

And your microbiome is remarkably individual. The exact mix of microorganisms varies from person to person and across different areas of the body.
