What Is NAD+? The Molecule Behind Skin Longevity Research

For decades, skincare formulation has been packaged into a very convenient structure. Brands discover a new botanical, develop a ‘better’ peptide, increase the concentration of a familiar active or find a better delivery system. Today, that structure is being challenged.

Across the world, some of the biggest advances in longevity science aren't beginning with skincare at all. They're beginning inside research laboratories studying how our cells produce energy, repair damage & respond to ageing over time. Scientists have repeatedly observed one molecule appearing at the centre of this research. It's called NAD+.

Unlike most ingredients found in skincare products, Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide or as we've come to know it, NAD+, wasn't discovered because it could brighten skin or soften wrinkles. Scientists were interested in it long before it entered the beauty industry because every living cell depends on it to function. As researchers began to understand more about healthy ageing, they also recognised that NAD+ plays an important role in many of the biological processes that gradually become less efficient with age.

That's precisely why it has become one of the most talked-about molecules in longevity research.

For decades, the beauty industry has been obsessed with treating biological ageing as a cosmetic concern. Fine lines called for the best retinol serum, pigmentation led people to Korean skincare, dryness meant splurging on the best wrinkle cream & loss of firmness often sent them searching for the best eye cream or another skin tightening cream.

The takeaway was simple… Treat the visible concern.

Longevity science shifted the focus from correcting the signs of ageing to supporting the biology that drives them.

What Exactly Is NAD+?

NAD+, short for Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, is a naturally occurring coenzyme found in virtually every cell of the human body. While the name sounds technical, its role is surprisingly straightforward.

Think of your skin as a factory that never shuts down. Every second, millions of cells are working around the clock to keep it healthy, resilient & functioning as they should. Like every factory worker, they need energy to perform their jobs efficiently.

NAD+ helps power many of these energy-dependent processes, which is why researchers continue studying its role in ageing and long-term cellular function.

As we age, those levels decrease but our cells don't suddenly stop functioning. They simply become less efficient at carrying out the jobs they've always performed.

Over time, those subtle biological changes become the visible changes we associate with ageing. This growing understanding has naturally captured the attention of the skincare industry.

Rather than searching for another ingredient that temporarily improves the appearance of skin, researchers are increasingly exploring how molecules like NAD+ may support the biological systems responsible for healthier skin over time.

But as exciting as NAD+ is, it's important to recognise that no single ingredient can define the future of skincare. Healthy skin is never governed by just one biological pathway alone.

Multiple systems constantly interact with one another, influencing how skin responds to everyday environmental stress and how it changes with age. Supporting just one pathway while ignoring the others is a little like repairing one brick in a cracked building and calling it fixed.

That's why longevity science is increasingly moving towards systems-based thinking rather than single-ingredient solutions.

Skin Longevity Brand Karmic Beauty was founded on the belief that skincare should evolve alongside science. Through India’s first Lab of Skin Longevity, we continuously study emerging research in biological ageing and translate those learnings into formulations designed for Indian skin. Our NAD+ Skin Longevity Night Cream reflects that approach, bringing together NAD+, Cica Exosomes, EvoBiome™ and Ubiquinone in an overnight formulation that supports skin barrier recovery, hydration, elasticity and long-term skin resilience. Every formulation is another step in our commitment to bringing the latest longevity science out of research laboratories and into everyday skincare.
